Still Tied After 30 Games!

Johnny Owens and Jerry Weldin both scored 2.5-0.5 in tonight's tournament to tie for 1st place!

We are both tied for (adjusted score) fourth place in the Club Champion qualification!

The tournament crosstable can be found here!

A tough tournament!! We each faced simular rated opponents and while Johnny had 2 whites to my one: I did have white in our individual game which was a hard fought draw (bishops of opposite colors). I think we should both go through to the Championship.

I agree with Jerry! We should both play in the Championship round, after all, we are the only two members to play in all the monthly tournaments this year!! Additionally, I'm for offering Kerry a spot in the Championship round to prevent anyone having a bye in the rounds. What's your thoughts, Joe, Gelvic and Ernie?

I read Johnny's comment reference both of them should be in the Championship round. Plus, myself to avoid anyone having a bye in the rounds. I assume if the club agrees to this solution, Jerry & Johnny won't need to play an elimation game(s). Wasn't the initial agreement that the top 4 would be in the Championship round? Having said that, I would be crazy not to accept the opportunity to play. My chance of winning is low, but I do enjoy playing you guys every chance I get, and I believe I can win. I'm just going to have to study harder.

I agree with the expanded format. Johnny and Jerry have demonstrated their commitment by playing in each monthly tournament. Johnny and Jerry have demonstrated their competitiveness by each winning a monthly tourney and by tying for first in a tough must win situation.

How about we rent a gym and let them duke it out in the middle of the gym floor while we sit in the stands and eat popcorn? We could even video the event and make DVDs. Why not? Well...maybe not the gym but we could certainly video parts of the match and the one w/ Kerry too. If someone will film it, I'll make the DVD.

Sorry we are taking so long. the three of us have agreed in principal to expanding the field to 5 players and are currently considering the merits of 6 players.

We have a competitive field. Don't forget that last October I was rated 1860. The 2010 Club Championship came down the final game of the December Tourney, a see-saw match between Johnny & I.

By expanding the field to 5 players, there will have to be 10 rounds. This would require an extra Tuesday and perhaps arriving 30-60 minutes earlier in order to get all the games in before the college goes on Christmas break. This will be a 10 round event whether there are 5 players or 6. If there are 5, someone will get a bye each round.

Perhaps I have been presumptuous. I assumed that expanding the field would necessarily mean a single round event.

A double round 4-man event takes 2 full club nights. A single round 5 or 6-man event takes 2 nights but the second night affords a little time at the end for camaraderie.

I assumed that it would be a double round robin tourney, but have no problem with a single round robin event! After all, we've already had the opportunity to played 30 games!!

It sounds like we are close.
can we agree on . . .
top 6 players
play each person once
Any objections??

Ernie said...

Joe, it sounds good to me.

Joe, I have no objections. We can draw lots or use ratings for pairing numbers and we will know before the tourney starts pairings and colors for each round!

I just got off the phone with Ernie and he has disspelled rumors I had heard that he didn't want to start early inorder to accomodate a double round robin with 5 players. I wish I had just kept quiet and not suggested that both Johnny and I be seeded into the "Championship Play Off". I went back and reviewed the 2008 format (on our old Pro Board) and could find no provision for tie breaks. There was a lot of healthy discussion which we should all review.

Having a "single round robin" would be almost like having a December tournament.

The only reason for having a "double round robin" was to eliminate the "luck" of drawing for colors and give the players a chance to play two games rather than one.

Rather than keep up this discussion; I recommend we "table" everything until after the weekend so as not to bother Gelvic who is playing at Kings Island this weekend.

We have decided to go with 6 players, single round robin.

I liked the idea of six players playing a single round robin. That would be my vote.
